How Is Climate Change Affecting San Andrés Cholula?
San Andrés Cholula faces significant challenges due to climate change. Prolonged and intensified droughts threaten the availability of essential water resources for local consumption, agriculture, and livestock. This water scarcity is aggravated by decreased aquifer recharge, as irregular rainfall and increased evaporation, caused by more frequent and severe heatwaves, reduce water infiltration into the ground, affecting long-term supply. Moreover, heavy rains cause flooding and severe damage to our urban infrastructure, including streets, drainage systems, and buildings. These phenomena not only compromise urban safety and mobility but also impose substantial economic burdens on the municipality. Adapting to these new conditions and strengthening local resilience are crucial steps for San Andrés Cholula.
What action are you taking to address climate change?
Water management is of primary importance for us. For this reason, we have launched drain cleaning campaigns to improve flow and prevent floods. Through the "Adopt a Tree" programme, we have distributed thousands of saplings to promote municipal reforestation—a vital action for carbon sequestration and water regulation. We have also organized sports events focused on water conservation. At the same time, we have launched a gradual recycling programme, installing specialized containers for aluminum, cardboard, and PET in strategic areas of the municipality. This is helping foster a circular economy and reduce our carbon footprint. Through our "Social Proximity Days," recognized with the "Best Municipal Practices for Sustainable Development in Puebla" award by the United Nations Development Programme and the Puebla State Government, we carry out activities promoting environmental consciousness and actively involving the community in protecting our environment. These measures reflect our commitment to a greener and more resilient San Andrés Cholula.

What are the benefits? Why is it important?
The urgency for San Andrés Cholula to confront climate change lies in safeguarding its natural resources, which are essential for water availability and ecosystems. It is crucial to protect the health and safety of the population by mitigating flood risks and heatwaves. The actions we are implementing to address climate change are vital for sustainable development and the quality of life of our residents. Benefits include improved air quality, sustainable waste management, flood prevention, and protection of the municipality's water infrastructure, as well as increased environmental awareness across all educational sectors. Addressing climate change fosters community resilience, preparing the municipality for future impacts. Our goal is to actively involve citizens, strengthening social cohesion. I recall a quote by Nobel Peace laureate Wangari Maathai that has accompanied me throughout my life and political career: "Every little thing you do really matters, and helps to build the world you want to live in."
