Nagaoka University of Technology (NUT) of Japan aims to produce creative abilities based on the educational philosophy of the “Science of Technology (GIGAKU)”. Nagaoka University of Technology has sent over 10,000 engineers out into the world to contribute to the development of industry and infrastructure. The institution believes that the SDGs should be the basic principle of engineering education and recognizes the role that engineering, science, technology and innovation can play in building resilient infrastructure and promoting international scientific collaboration for sustainable development.
NUT has set up the SDG-oriented engineer education program Gigaku SDG Institute through inter-university collaboration. To develop and grow the program, NUT established the UNESCO Chair on Engineering Education for Sustainable Development as part of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme. The overall objective is to develop student capabilities to transform their knowledge to solve real world problems.
The university has cooperation agreements with more than 100 universities and institutes in Japan and around the world and has established overseas offices in seven countries. NUT is contributing to technological progress through its collaborative research activities with industry to help solve environmental issues such as improving energy-efficiency.
NUT also holds an international conference on Science of Technology Innovation (STI-Gigaku) to share research progress and achievements in the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development examining themes such as energy, climate change, poverty and hunger and seeking solutions to these global issues.
The university also established the Nagaoka Summer School for Young Engineers that offers international students the opportunity to participate in various research fields in the areas of engineering, materials science and technology.
