PRESS RELEASE

Ihsanoglu strongly condemns

Israel’s arrest of al-shaer

The Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, condemned the arrest of Mr. Nasser Al Shaer, the Palestinian Deputy Premier, by the Israeli occupation forces in his residence in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. The Secretary-General affirmed the need for Israel to abide by the international law, the Geneva Conventions and the agreements concluded with the Palestinian side, particularly while dealing with the Palestinian personalities elected by the Palestinian people, and the Palestinian civilians in the occupied Palestinian territories. He further reaffirmed that these arbitrary measures taken by the Israeli government will lead the region to more violence.

The Secretary-General demanded that the Israeli government immediately release Mr. Al-Shaer and Dr. Aziz Duwik, Chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council, as well as all officials of the Palestinian National Authority.

The Secretary-General denounced the international community’s silence about the Israeli occupation measures against the Palestinian officials at a time when the international community denounced the capture of the Israeli soldier. He warned the international community against continuing the double standard policy toward the Arab-Israeli conflict , stressing the need to  implement the international resolutions on the Palestinian question.
