Press Release GA/PAL/17/Add. 1

17 October 1947

CORRECTION ON TAKE #5 AND SUMMARY OF PRESS RELEASE GA/PAL/17, DATED 16 OCTOBER 1947

Substitute the following for Take #5 as it appeared on Thursday 16 October:

“The fifth speaker, Dr. Guillermo Belt (Cuba) declared that Cuba considered the Majority Recommendations unworkable. He said that insofar as the recommendations did not represent the fulfillment of Jewish aspirations, the enactment of partition at this Assembly would mean the next General Assembly would have a question and demand on behalf of the Jewish people that they be given more living space.

The Cuban Delegation, he said, a factor in its decision was a statement made by a spokesman for the Jewish Agency in the Ad Hoc Committee to the effect that the proposals, instead of representing a fulfillment of the rights of the Jewish people, comprised rather a very serious understatement of those rights. Dr. Belt also quoted a remark by the chief of the Irgun which contended that the proposed partition of Palestine is a denial and betrayal of our people.

Dr. Belt said that out of the proposals presented to the Committee Cuba felt certain a definite solution to the Jewish problem would be found.

He added that Cuba was quite willing to support a plan to insure the displaced persons of Europe their permanent sojourn in countries where they could enjoy religious and political freedom.”

In the Summary the paragraph on Page 2 dealing with the speech of Dr. Belt should be in accordance with the above correction.

END CORRECTION
