In the Venice Declaration of 1980 and in their successive statements, the member States of the European Community have clearly and coherently defined the principles on which a solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict has to be based. I should like here to summarize the essential elements: Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied since 1967 and the recognition of the right of all the States of the region, including Israel, to existence and security, on the basis of resolutions 242 (1967) and 338 (1973) of the United Nations Security council; and recognition of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination with all that this implies.
