The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Patrice Talon, President of the Republic of Benin. The two leaders discussed the ongoing political and institutional reforms in the country. The Secretary-General commended Benin’s efforts with the countries of the Lake Chad Basin Commission in the establishment of the regional Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to fight Boko Haram.

The Secretary-General called on Benin to encourage the holding of the long-planned ECCAS-ECOWAS joint Summit on Boko Haram and noted the importance of ensuring that all counter-terrorism efforts are carried out in full respect of international human rights. 

He also commended Benin’s efforts towards maritime safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea.
