The Secretary-General met today with the Prime Minister of Fiji, H.E. Mr. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. The Secretary-General thanked Fiji for its contribution to global peace operations. He praised Fiji’s vocal advocacy on climate change and for being the first country to ratify the Paris Agreement. The Secretary-General underscored the importance of integrating the outcomes of the World Humanitarian Summit and the Paris Agreement with the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Secretary-General congratulated the Prime Minister on the election of Ambassador Peter Thomson as the President of the General Assembly for its 71st session. He commended Fiji’s leadership on Sustainable Development Goal 14 for the conservation of oceans, welcoming its co-chairmanship of the 2017 UN Conference to support its implementation.
The Secretary-General underlined the importance of an atmosphere conducive to the exercise of the rights of freedom of opinion, expression and association in Fiji.
