The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil. The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Brazil’s contributions to the Sustainable Development Agenda since the process began in 2012 with the Rio +20 Conference. He expressed hope that Brazil would ensure that national legislation and institutions support the implementation of the agenda.

The Secretary-General commended Brazil for its longstanding and exemplary support to UN peacekeeping, including to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). He offered condolences on the death of Brazilian MINUSTAH Force Commander José Luiz Jaborandy, Jr. on 30 August.

The Secretary-General and President Rousseff further exchanged views on prospects for the Paris climate change conference. The Secretary-General welcomed Brazil’s submission of its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) as a strong signal of Brazil’s commitment to finalizing a new climate agreement in Paris.
