Statement by H.E. Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly
16 December 2020
Excellencies,
Distinguished delegates,
I congratulate you for successfully concluding this session.
In an era of inequalities, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is even more acute for the most vulnerable people around the world. The coronavirus pandemic is revealing structural inequalities and obstacles to the full enjoyment of human rights.
Thus, the resolutions of the Third Committee need to be underpinned by our actions in policy and practice. The onus is upon us to stand up for the most vulnerable people in society every day and ensure that human rights are upheld for all. We must continue to work together to uphold the inalienable human rights of everyone, everywhere.
I leave you with a reminder of the Charter of the United Nations, wherein ‘we the peoples’ committed,
“…to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small…”
I thank you.
