In an interview with María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly and fourth woman to ever hold that position, the newspaper asks about the Amazon: Ms. Espinosa Garcés said that: “Eighty per cent of all emissions on our planet come from energy production and transportation. Amazonia is burning, but the problem is in the air above it. Emissions are not only caused by fires in the Amazon, although this is a common belief. Global warming is the result of our development model, which is prevailing around the world.” At the same time, Espinosa Garcés stressed that the UN must be self-critical. “We could do more and much better. At the same time, we must understand that the United Nations cannot be replaced by anything else. Nothing can replace this multilateral system.” As only the fourth woman to be the President of the UN General Assembly, the newspaper comments that she has had a tremendous career, holding positions traditionally held by men.
