High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on Financing for Peacebuilding

Wednesday 27 April 2022

Member States decided to convene a high-level meeting of the General Assembly on financing for peacebuilding at its seventy-sixth session in the twin resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council (A/RES/75/201 and S/RES/2558 (2020), respectively) at the conclusion of the 2020 UN peacebuilding architecture review. The resolutions note that peacebuilding financing remains a critical challenge, and therefore call for the high-level meeting to advance, explore and consider options for ensuring adequate, predictable and sustained financing for peacebuilding.

The high-level meeting of the General Assembly will serve as a forum for Member States to advance possible solutions and make commitments to address the identified financing gap for prevention and peacebuilding in the context of fast-changing, protracted and complex violent conflicts. The linkages among peacemaking, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, development and humanitarian action are integral and mutually reinforcing, and there is a need for funding across the peace continuum. An array of financing mechanisms and sources are required to ensure effective and adequate peacebuilding activities of national governments, civil society, women, youth and UN entities, including through domestic resources, voluntary and assessed contributions from Member States and innovative partnerships.

Roundtables, Monday 25 April 2022

Four informal and interactive roundtables will take place on Monday 25 April 2022. They will address a selection of themes, namely Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) results and resourcing ; Peace-responsive investing through the private sector; Funding of local peacebuilding; and Flexibility of funding for peacebuilding, including in transition settings. The roundtables will allow participants, including high-level representatives of Member States, civil society and United Nations entities, to focus on some of the challenges related to financing for peacebuilding from a broad perspective. The key messages identified at each roundtable will serve inform and facilitate action-oriented commitments at the plenary on 27 April 2022.
