Palestine question/Acceptance of truce proposal – Message of UN Mediator to SecCo President

MESSAGE DATED 9 JUNE 1948 FROM UNITED NATIONS MEDIATOR ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL

I have the honour to transmit the following message from the United Nations Mediator to the interested Governments concerning the acceptance of the Truce.

"1. I have the honor to inform you that in response to my note of June 7 setting forth my  proposals as United Nations Mediator for truce in Palestine, I have today, 9 June, received unconditional acceptance of my proposals from all interested parties. The cease-fire and truce, therefore, will be effective Friday, 11 June 1948  at 6:00 o'clock in the morning, GMT.

"2. Public announcement of the acceptance of the truce by the parties concerned will be made by me in Cairo tonight, 9 June, at 8:00 o'clock, GMT. Simultaneous announcement may be made by your Government at the corresponding hour, but in any case should not be made before 8:00 o'clock (GMT).

“3. I take this opportunity to express to your Governments my deepest gratitude for the splendid co-operation which has been given to me in this difficult task and my warm appreciation of the high motives which have led your Government to accept the proposals for the truce."

I am, of course, highly gratified that my efforts toward the truce have now borne fruit. I will do my utmost to supervise the terms of the truce fairly and efficiently and will immediately turn my attention to the broader aspects of my task as Mediator, mainly the promotion of a peaceful adjustment of the future situation of Palestine

(Signed)
