on Israel’s new settlement plans in East Jerusalem

Israel has unveiled new construction plans for the occupied Palestinian territories. According to Peace Now, an Israeli NGO, back in December 2012 Jerusalem’s municipal authorities approved a plan to build 2,600 residential units in Givat Hamatos, a settlement in East Jerusalem. The implementation of this project may start once the construction tenders are announced.

Moscow expresses grave concern over this project, which may undermine Palestine’s territorial continuity, separating such important areas as East Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

Russia views plans to build settlements in East Jerusalem as running counter to the efforts aimed at finding solutions that would facilitate a two-state solution of the Palestinian issue. Such issues as settlement construction and the status of East Jerusalem along with a number of other issues are included in negotiations on the final status of Palestinian territories and can only be addressed as part of a political settlement. We call on the Israeli authorities to reconsider their decision.
