Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini is in Cairo today to attend the International Conference on Palestine, “Reconstructing Gaza”, which Italy is co-chairing. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for bilateral meetings on the situation in Libya and the Syrian crisis, especially as regards the tragedy in Kobane.

“It is vital for the Cairo conference to produce a real, shared commitment on the goals set by Egypt and Norway in organising the meeting. They are: consolidate the ceasefire of 26 August, mobilise new international funding for the reconstruction and ensure that the Palestinian Authority has full responsibility in Gaza and in the reconstruction of the Strip”, observed the Minister. “This Conference can be a chance to give a new impetus to the peace process and pave the way to open a true dialogue between the parties to a conflict that has gone on for far too long. The action-reaction, destruction-reconstruction cycle can only be broken with the decision and the courage to follow the road leading to the birth of two states living in security one beside the other. And to follow that road to right to the end”.

The Conference will be opened by the Egyptian President, Abdel Fatah al Sisi, and the Palestinian President, Abu Mazen. It will be chaired by Italy, the United Nations, the Arab League, the EU, France, Jordan, Japan and the Quartet.
