Abbas and Ihsanoglu agree to continue mobilizing support for the recognition of the Palestinian State

The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas received on Tuesday, 24 January 2012, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, in his residence in the Jordanian capital Amman. The meeting addressed the developments in the Palestinian cause and the efforts being made by the two parties to mobilize support for the recognition of the Palestinian State in the United Nations.
 
In the beginning of the meeting, the Secretary-General was briefed on the results of the recent tour of the Palestinian President in Europe aimed at mobilizing support for the recognition of the Palestinian State and at explaining the Palestinian position on the current stalemate in the peace process.
 
Abbas stated that the Palestinians regard the date of 26 January as decisive after which they will assess and examine their options internally and with the Arab follow-up committee due to meet on 4 February.
 
The meeting also addressed the issue of Palestinian reconciliation and President Abbas briefed the Secretary-General on the ongoing developments in this issue. The two parties also discussed the latest developments in the occupied city of Al-Quds and agreed on the need to continue close coordination with a view to mobilizing support to the Palestinian State’s UN membership.
