Federal Foreign Office concerned about Israeli plans to construct new settlement units in East Jerusalem
date of issue
28.10.2014
A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement in Berlin on 28 October on Israel’s announcement about plans to construct 1000 new housing units in the Ramat Shlomo and Har Homa settlements in East Jerusalem.
The German Government is extremely concerned about renewed plans to extend Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. This step creates further obstacles on the path to a two-state solution, in which the status of Jerusalem also needs to be mutually resolved between the parties. It also complicates the already difficult talks in Cairo on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. In light of the ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem, there is reason to fear that the extension of settlements could exacerbate the situation.
