Japanese Government condemns Tel Aviv bombing – Japanese Govt. press release (Non-UN document)

Statement by the Press Secretary/Director-General for Press and Public Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv

February 26, 2005

1. The Government of Japan firmly condemns the suicide bombing by extremists in Tel Aviv that occurred at the midnight of February 25 (local time: the morning of February 26 according to Japan's time). Terrorism cannot be justified for any reason. The Government of Japan expresses condolences to the bereaved families and heartfelt sympathy to the many that are injured.
2. This terrorist attack took place when both Israeli and Palestinian sides are making their serious efforts for the resumption of the peace process after their leaders agreed on the mutual cessation of violence at Sharm El-Sheikh on February 8th, 2005. This terrorist act thus constitutes a serious challenge to such peace efforts. The Government of Japan requests the Palestinian Authority to make its utmost efforts to control extremists according to the Roadmap so that this terrorist incident will not ruin the achievements of peace efforts so far made by the two sides.
