ICRC monitored the release of Palestinian detainees
The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Jerusalem on 21 February 2005.
Acting as a neutral intermediary, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today monitored the release process of 500 Palestinian detainees from Israeli detention places to the West Bank and Gaza Strip. ICRC delegates were present at the various locations of release namely Tarqumiya, Beituniya, Tulkarm, Salem and Erez crossings. Prior to their release, the ICRC has carried out individual interviews with all the 500 detainees in order to confirm they agreed to the location of their release.
Under the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, the ICRC has been visiting Israeli places of detention holding Palestinian detainees since 1967 to monitor their treatment and living conditions. These visits, being a standing priority of the ICRC, will continue in all Israeli places of detention.
