Spain condemns Israeli new settlemen plans in Givat Hamatos – Spain MoFAC statement/Non-UN document

OFFICIAL STATEMENT 278

Authorisation of settlements in Givat Hamatos

Spain regrets and condemns the decision taken by the Government of Israel to promote the establishment of a large number of new settlements in the Givat Hamatos area of East Jerusalem and calls on said government to reconsider and reverse its decision.

02/10/2014

The Government of Spain believes that this step by the Government of Israel does not reflect the formally accepted target of negotiating with the Palestinians to seek a peaceful, global and lasting solution to the situation based on two States.

Spain considers this decision as especially serious given the highly sensitive nature of the area in question. The unilateral establishment of colonies in Givat Hamatos would not only pose an obstacle to the viability of the definitive solution involving the creation of two States coexisting in peace, security and prosperity but would also go against some of the parameters of the process already accepted by Israel.

The Government of Spain once again reiterates its firm position on the illegal nature of all such settlements, a position it shares with the international community.
