Israel/Palestinian Territories/Cairo – Conference on Palestine and reconstructing Gaza

Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development Spokesman

(Paris, 12/10/2014)

On Sunday 12 October, Laurent Fabius co-chaired the conference in Cairo for Palestine and for the reconstruction of Gaza. Among other people, he met President Abbas; the Secretary General of the Arab League ; and his American, Egyptian, Norwegian and Italian counterparts. He announced that France will mobilize euro40 million in 2014 in support of the Palestinian people.

Laurent Fabius emphasized the need to end the tragic cycle of destruction and reconstruction in Gaza. He called on the parties to conclude, immediately, a lasting ceasefire that would lead to a lifting of the blockade of the Gaza Strip as well as respond to the legitimate security concerns of Israel. He reaffirmed to President Abbas France's support for the inter-Palestinian reconciliation process. They agreed to hold the first French-Palestinian intergovernmental seminar in France at the beginning of 2015. Laurent Fabius highlighted the urgent need to end the political impasse and, given the previous failures, to adapt the negotiation method. He called for a collective momentum with greater involvement of the international community in order to support the resumption of negotiations and make it possible, finally, to reach a positive conclusion./.
