Sharm el-Sheikh Summit – Australian Foreign Minister statement – Australian Foreign Ministry press release/Non-UN document

Media Statement

FA19 – 9 February 2005

Sharm-El Sheikh Summit Meeting

Australia commends Egypt’s initiative in hosting the summit in Sharm El-Sheik and welcomes the meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.  This is a significant step forward.

The summit meeting marks the resumption of substantial peace process negotiations after four years of violence.  We are encouraged by the announcement of a cessation of violence.  We urge all sides not to pass up this opportunity to give impetus to the peace process.

Australia has consistently encouraged the parties to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to move negotiations forward on a just and lasting peace.  The best prospect for such a peace remains a two state solution that will ensure Israel’s security and provide for a viable and stable Palestinian state.
