I have the honour to forward herewith a copy of a letter dated 7 January 2009 from His Excellency Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Prime Minister of Malaysia (see annex). The letter, inter alia, requests your personal intervention with members of the Security Council in order to demand a cessation of hostility and to stabilize the situation in Gaza. The Prime Minister also requests you to give your full support for the convening of an emergency special session of the General Assembly in accordance with the “Uniting for peace” resolution 377 (V) of 3 November 1950 in order to address and take action on the issue.

Permanent Representative of Malaysia

Annex to the letter dated 7 January 2009 from the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations addressed to the President of the General Assembly

As Your Excellency would be aware, the current situation in Gaza is very grave. There is a real danger of an alarming humanitarian crisis developing and putting at risk thousands of human lives. This is due to the disproportionate and excessive use of military force against Gaza by Israel.

To prevent the worst from happening, the members of the Security Council must assume the primary responsibility of halting the violence and imposing an immediate ceasefire to be observed by all parties to the conflict. Nothing short of a complete cessation of hostilities would be required to avert a total disaster in Gaza.

I would like to urge the members of the Security Council to exercise the desired leadership and enable the necessary resolution to be adopted, which should include the immediate establishment of a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Gaza to enforce the ceasefire and prevent the outbreak of new hostilities.

As President of the General Assembly, you have a crucial role to play. I would like to seek your personal intervention with members of the Security Council and with the leaders of the concerned parties to demand an immediate cessation of violence and that they work to re-establish stability in Gaza.

I would also like to request you to give your full support for the convening of an emergency special session of the General Assembly in accordance with the “Uniting for peace” resolution 377 (V) of 3 November 1950 to address the gravity of the situation in Gaza. Such a session would enable the general membership of the United Nations to take the necessary action to restore peace and security in Gaza.

Excellency, may I count on your continued support in finding a peaceful and enduring solution to the problems in the Middle East.

(Signed) Abdullah Ahmad Badawi
