18th Meeting (AM)
PALESTINIAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE INFORMED OF ENDORSEMENT OF ITS REPORT BY
CONFERENCE OF NON-ALIGNED COUNTRIES
The Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable
Rights of the Palestinian People, Medoune Fall (Senegal), informed the
Committee, at a meeting this morning, that the recent Conference of
the Non-Aligned Countries, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, had endorsed the
Committee's report and recommendations.
He said the Conference had requested the delegations of the
non-aligned States to support the report at the forthcoming General
Assembly session, and had called on the competent bodies of the
United Nations to take measures in conformity with the programme of
action recommended in the Committee's report.
He said the report of the Committee would be issued tomorrow,
10 September, as a General Assembly document.
He said the 20-nation Committee should maintain contact with the
co-ordinating body of the Conference of Non-Aligned Countries regarding
the consideration of the report at the Assembly session. He felt that
it should be dealt with under the heading, "Question of Palestine".
At the start of the meeting, the Chairman spoke in tribute to the
late Chairman Mao Tse-tung of China, calling him "a great man, who has
put his imprint on our century and will be long remembered".
The Committee rose for a minute of silence in memory of Chairman
Mao, who died early today.
Reporting on his participation in the Conference of the Non-Aligned
Countries, Mr. Fall said that a section of the political declaration of
the Conference, as well as two of the resolutions adopted, dealt with
the Palestinian question and the report of the Committee.
He said the Conference had reaffirmed the full backing by the
non-aligned States of the struggle of the Palestinian people for their
inalienable rights, including the right to return and to an independent,
sovereign State in Palestine.
He congratulated the representative of the Palestine Liberation
Organization (PLO) on the election of the PLO as a member of the
co-ordinating body of the Conference of Non-Aligned Countries.
Zehdi Labib Terzi, of the PLO, said "with great pride" that the
community of non-aligned States had endorsed the struggle of the
Palestinian people for their inalienable rights and the policy
adopted by the PLO leadership, "particularly at these times of which we
are all aware".
