I have the honour to transmit to you herewith the text of the statement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, H.E.           STATEMENT ISSUED ON 26 FEBRUARY 1994 BY DATO' ABDULLAH BIN HAJI

AHMAD BADAWI, MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF MALAYSIA, ON THE

HEBRON MASSACRE

Malaysia strongly condemns the brutal massacre at the Al-Haram Al Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron and feels deeply saddened that such an incident occurred in a holy place during the month of Ramadan.  Israel cannot escape the responsibility for the killings.  This massacre once again highlighted the gravity of the situation in the occupied territories and the urgent need for Israel to change its policies and practices in the occupied territories.  We call on the Israeli authorities to adhere to international obligations in respecting the rights of the Palestinian people and its holy places.  Those responsible for the massacre must account for their actions and the entire incident should not be dismissed as the action of an alleged madman.

Malaysia also calls for the international community, particularly the United Nations, to provide effective protection to the Palestinian people in the occupied territories.

The Government and people of Malaysia extend their heartfelt condolences to the State of Palestine and the families of the deceased and share with them their grief.
