Mideast situation/Lebanon – Letter from Lebanon

Letter dated 12 October 1987 from the Permanent Representative of Lebanon

to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary -General

On instructions from my Government and further to our previous letters to you concerning the criminal air raids Israel persists in carrying out against Lebanese towns and villages, I have the honour to inform you of the following:

On 10 October 1987, a squadron of four Israeli fighters staged an air raid on Yanta and its surrounding area (Bekaa region), located approximately 40 kilometres from the Lebanese-Israeli harder, border, firing over 20 rockets, which, according to a provisional count, caused many casualties and major material damage.

Since the beginning of the year, Israel has conducted 23 air raids against Lebanese territory, the most recent being the barbarous shelling of the Aïn el Hiloué camp, in which more than 50 people were killed and over 100 injured.

The Lebanese Government strongly condemns this latest act of aggression by Israel, and issues another warning as to the consequences which could result from Israel's continued violation of Lebanese airspace and the indiscriminate shelling of Lebanese towns and villages. It also requests the United Nations Security Council to take urgently whatever measures are necessary to make Israel conform to the Council's resolutions, the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the international legal instruments.

I should be grateful if you would arrange for the text of this letter to be circulated as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda item 39, and of the Security Council.

(Signed) Rachid FAKHOURY

Permanent Representative
