Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Enrique Peña Nieto, President of Mexico.  He welcomed the important role that Mexico is playing in promoting development cooperation and financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Secretary-General offered his condolences for the eight Mexican nationals who lost their lives in Egypt on 13 September.  He welcomed the President’s deployment of Mexican military officers to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) and UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

Regarding the disappearance, one year ago, of 43 students in Iguala, the Secretary-General welcomed the steps that the President had taken personally to follow up on the case.

The Secretary-General and President Peña Nieto also discussed climate change and Mexico’s commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the UN.
