The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Truong Tan Sang, President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The Secretary-General thanked the President for receiving him in May in Hanoi. They discussed the historic agreement on a universal and transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Secretary-General said he counted on Viet Nam’s strong commitment to implement the goals. He also underlined the importance of climate change and Viet Nam’s role in this regard.
The Secretary-General expressed gratitude for Viet Nam’s decision to provide significant additional assets for UN peacekeeping operations. In relation to the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, the Secretary-General reiterated the importance of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the peaceful resolution of disputes. He also expressed the need for all parties in the region to increase transparency and predictability of actions to avoid inadvertently sparking clashes.
