I join legions of admirers across the world in wishing Sir Brian Urquhart, the legendary long-time United Nations official, a very happy 100thbirthday.  
 
Sir Brian’s imprint on the United Nations has been as profound as that of anyone in the Organization’s history.  
 
As one of the Organization’s earliest employees, he set the standard for the international civil service: principled, dedicated, impartial.  
 
As an aide to Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, he helped to define the UN’s scope of action in addressing armed conflict and other global challenges.  
 
And as a close associate of Ralph Bunche, an illustrious figure in his own right, Sir Brian helped to establish and then propel international peacekeeping into wide-ranging use as a flagship UN activity.
 
Sir Brian’s commitment to peace was forged in part during the Second World War, where he was among the Allied soldiers present shortly after the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen death camp.  Across the decades, in service to several of my predecessors, he was at the centre of formative global events, from the Congo to the Middle East.  He also wrote extensively about international affairs, definitive biographies of Hammarskjöld and Bunche as well as highly engaging and insightful sketches of major figures with whom he dealt over the years, prepared for the UN website.
 
With warmth, generosity and encouragement, Sir Brian has been an inspirational figure for UN staff and countless young people as they pursued their careers.  His memoir, A Life in Peace and War, should be required reading for all who work for the United Nations and for all who wish to understand the Organization’s work.  Writing in it about the earliest days of his career, Sir Brian noted that “We were all optimists… who believed in the possibility of organizing a peaceful and just world”.  
 
Sir Brian maintained that optimism across his life, shaping the United Nations and history itself.  As we mark this milestone, we are grateful for his brilliant and incomparable contributions as a stalwart servant of “we the peoples”.

Je me joins à la foule de ses admirateurs et admiratrices du monde entier pour souhaiter un très joyeux anniversaire à Sir Brian Urquhart, fonctionnaire émérite et légende de l’Organisation des Nations Unies, qui fête aujourd’hui ses 100 ans.
 
Sir Brian a marqué l’ONU d’une empreinte aussi indélébile qu’inégalée.
 
Embauché parmi les premiers fonctionnaires de l’Organisation, il a donné le ton : celui d’une fonction publique internationale dynamique, impartiale, à la hauteur des principes qu’elle défend.
 
Aux côtés du Secrétaire général Dag Hammarskjöld, il a aidé à définir le champ d’action de l’ONU dans le cadre des conflits armés et d’autres situations de crise internationales.

Soldat allié pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a fait partie des contingents envoyés au camp de Bergen-Belsen peu après sa libération, ce qui a contribué en partie à son choix de s’engager au service de la paix. Au fil des décennies, à l’appui de plusieurs de mes prédécesseurs, il a été au cœur d’évènements décisifs partout dans le monde, du Congo au Moyen-Orient. Il a par ailleurs beaucoup écrit sur les affaires internationales et est l’auteur des biographies de référence de Dag Hammarskjöld et Ralph Bunche, ainsi que de portraits subtils et attachants des personnalités qu’il a côtoyées au fil des ans, qu’il a préparés pour le site Web de l’ONU.
 
Toujours cordial, généreux et bienveillant, Sir Brian a été une source d’inspiration pour le personnel de l’Organisation et pour d’innombrables jeunes gens à l’aube de leur carrière. A Life in Peace and War, son autobiographie, est un ouvrage incontournable pour toutes celles et ceux qui travaillent pour l’ONU ou souhaitent comprendre le fonctionnement de notre Organisation. À propos du début de sa carrière, il y écrit : « Nous étions tous des optimistes... qui croyaient en la possibilité de créer un monde juste et pacifique. »
 
Cet optimisme, que Sir Brian a su conserver tout au long de sa vie, a modelé l’Organisation des Nations Unies et façonné l’histoire. Nous célébrons avec lui cette étape importante et lui sommes à jamais reconnaissants, nous, peuples des Nations Unies, de sa contribution exceptionnelle et inégalable au service de l’Organisation.
