Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Sudan

In accordance with the 8 June 2007 Roadmap for the Darfur Political Process, and on the advice of the AU and UN Special Envoys for Darfur, the Secretary-General, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission have agreed to convene renewed peace negotiations for Darfur on 27 October 2007. The negotiations will begin in Libya, under the lead of the AU-UN Special Envoys. They will continue to work in close coordination with the countries of the region and ensure that the concerns of civil society, representatives of internally displaced persons, women's groups and tribal leaders are channeled into the negotiation process.

During his visit to Sudan, Chad and Libya, which ends today, the Secretary-General received strong endorsement of the AU-UN led upcoming negotiations. In preparation for the talks, the Secretary-General urges all parties to declare their serious commitment to achieve a political solution to the Darfur crisis; to create a security environment in Darfur conducive to negotiations; to participate in and commit to the outcome of the negotiation effort; and to cease all hostilities immediately.

There must be an end to violence and insecurity, a strengthened ceasefire supported by the incoming UNAMID-Hybrid Operation, as well as an improvement in the humanitarian situation and better prospects for development and recovery for the people of Darfur.
