The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Wang Yi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, on the margins of the 69th General Assembly.
The Secretary-General expressed his gratitude to China for its strong partnership with the United Nations and its contributions to every area of the Organization’s work for the promotion of peace and security and sustainable development.
He expressed appreciation for China’s recent contribution at the Climate Change Summit. He hoped that all world leaders would come to the General Assembly next year and endorse the Sustainable Development Goals in the same way as they had with the Millennium Development Goals in 2000.
The Secretary-General underlined the urgent necessity for members of the international community to take immediate concrete steps to help contain the outbreak of Ebola virus.
He expressed appreciation for China’s contribution of humanitarian assistance in Gaza to alleviate the suffering. The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister also discussed South Sudan and Afghanistan.
The Secretary-General briefed the Foreign Minister on the forthcoming review to improve the effectiveness of United Nations peacekeeping operations and special political missions, and he said he counted on China’s support.
