Readout of the Secretary-General's telephone call with Senator George Mitchell, US Envoy for the Middle East

The Secretary-General and Senator Mitchell exchanged views on the direct talks between the Israelis and Palestinians. Senator Mitchell informed the Secretary-General that he would be travelling to the region for talks with President Abbas and Prime Minister Netanyahu. The US was continuing its efforts to determine a course of action that would sustain direct talks. The Secretary-General informed the Senator of his statement today on the settlement issue, which was a concern for all Quartet members, and offered his continued support to efforts to promote peace.
