The Secretary-General met today with Mr. Sebastián Piñera, President of Chile, in his first visit to the UN in New York. The Secretary-General reiterated the UN's support to post-earthquake reconstruction and commended the Government's response to the disaster. He also expressed his sympathy for the plight of the trapped miners and wished every success to the rescue operations. He thanked Chile for its continued engagement in Haiti.

The Secretary-General welcomed Chile's progress on the MDGs and its leadership in South-South cooperation. The Secretary-General and President Piñera also discussed climate change and the upcoming Cancún summit.
