Readout of Secretary-General's Meeting with His Excellency Mr. Mustafa Mohammed Abdul Jaleel, President of the National Transitional Council of Libya

Today, the Secretary-General met with the Chairman of the National Transitional Council (NTC). He congratulated the NTC and the Libyan people for their courage and determination to bring about democratic change. They discussed the overall situation in Libya, as well as the deployment of the planned UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) that will be headed by his Special Representative, Mr. Ian Martin.

The Secretary-General noted the challenges ahead including in the areas of disarmament, national reconciliation, building the rule of law and democratic institutions. He pledged the support of the United Nations in helping the Libyan people meet these challenges. The Secretary-General pointed to the extent of participation by Member States at the highest level in the meeting that he would be convening later that morning, as a testament of the interest of the international community in the success of Libyan efforts to build a democratic and prosperous nation.

The Secretary-General urged the NTC to ensure that the interim government is truly representative of the Libyan people and to respect the commitments expressed by the NTC Chairman on the respect for human rights and rule of law.

The NTC Chairman expressed his deep gratitude to the Secretary-General for the support and assistance extended to the Libyan people.
