Deputy Secretary-General's video message on the occasion of the 17th International Association for Official Statistics Conference and 3rd International Statistical Institute Regional Statistics Conference

Statements | Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General

Your Excellency President Hichilema, Distinguished delegates, Dear friends,

By hosting this event, Zambia confirms its commitment to these matters and its willingness to lead on the transformative role of data and statistics for the sustainable development of Africa.

I also wish to commend the leadership of the International Association for Official Statistics and the International Statistical Institute for bringing this conference to Africa – at a vital moment for the Sustainable Development Goals, halfway through the 2030 Agenda.

Ahead of this year’s SDG Summit, it will be critical to ensure we improve data availability, transparency and financing if we are to get back on track to meet the goals by 2030.

Timely, credible, and high-quality monitoring and tracking is the lifeblood of planning and key to rescuing the SDGs.

I also commend Zambia for undertaking the first digital census, with support from the Economic Commission for Africa, UN agencies, and partners.

The census data will help many decision-making processes and inform the SDGs and other development frameworks at national and local levels.

I encourage the Zambian government to use this data for everyone’s benefit.

Finally, the transformation of the continent lies with the young people.

It gives me great pleasure to see that this conference has taken the lead in engaging young statisticians and data technologists to contribute to the statistical development of the continent.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Credible data can contribute to changing people’s lives.

Let us work together to harness that power to transform Africa and the world.

Thank you.
