On 3 September 2021, the President of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, held an in-person coordination meeting with H.E. Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason, Permanent Representative of Ireland to the UN and the President of the Security Council for the month of September 2021.
Ambassador Byrne Nason briefed the President on the programme of work of the Security Council during Ireland`s Presidency in September, focusing on the upcoming high-level briefing on maintenance of peace and security (which will feature engagement with The Elders), as well as the open debate on peacekeeping operations with a focus on transition, and the high-level open debate on climate and security. The two Presidents also discussed the preparations for the high-level week of the 76th session of the General Assembly, the importance of cooperation and coordination between the General Assembly and the Security Council, as well as developments in Afghanistan.
President Bozkir commended Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason for her plans to hold several in-person high-level meetings of the Security Council and the rich programme of work for the month of September. The President also expressed, through the Irish Presidency, his appreciation to the members of the Security Council for the exemplary collaboration that was extended throughout his Presidency of the 75th session of the General Assembly.
