Remarks by H.E. Mr. Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly

30 March 2021

Excellencies,

Distinguished delegates,

I thank you for your participation in this meeting. I thank the Secretary-General, the Under-Secretary-General, the Acting Assistant Secretary-Generals, for their ongoing efforts towards peace and stability in Syria.

Today’s discussion has demonstrated, once again, the plight of the Syrian people. It has been a decade of horror.

When the leaders of the world came together seventy-five years ago, they recognised that when one suffers, none of us prosper. We cannot, in good conscience, turn our backs on the Syrian people.

I ask, once again, that in line with existing resolutions, and the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations, all Member States will support:

  • The improvement of the human rights situation in Syria;
  • Unimpeded humanitarian access to those in need;
  • The call for an immediate and nationwide ceasefire;
  • And a Syrian-led, Syrian-owned, political settlement in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254 and the UN’s efforts in this regard.

The Syrian people deserve to live a life of their choosing, free from fear. Let us not forget, here in this General Assembly Hall, that it is our responsibility, to protect and uphold, their fundamental human rights.

I thank you.
