– As delivered –
Statement by H.E. Tijjani Muhammad Bande, President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly
26 September 2019
Excellencies,
Distinguished Delegates,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Introduction
It is my honor to participate in this important ceremony. I thank the organizers of today’s event. The adoption of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017 is a significant moment for humanity.
This milestone event demonstrated Member States commitment to their vision of a nuclear weapons free world.
On the path of peace, every step counts. Each signature and ratification of this landmark treaty is crucial. I acknowledge the leadership of Member States present today towards the cause of total elimination of nuclear weapons.
We commend states that have signed or ratified the treaty today and we encourage those who have not done so to join in this important action.
Today we are also convening, the annual High-Level Plenary Meeting on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
These events will guide our deliberations ahead of next years NPT review conference.
Indeed these important conversations and multilateral actions will further mobilize international actions towards achieving our common goal of a nuclear weapons free world.
Excellencies,
I once again commend all countries present here and look forward to working together to ensure a peaceful and prosperous world for all. I am confident that by striving together we will succeed in delivering for all.
Thank you.
