PRESIDENT ESPINOSA DISCUSSES CLIMATE ACTION, YOUTH AND 2030 AGENDA DURING VISIT TO PORTUGAL

The President of the General Assembly has arrived in Lisbon, Portugal, for her first official visit to the country.

Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa met with Foreign Minister, H.E. Augusto Santos Silva, to discuss the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the country’s active stance on youth as well as environmental action.

During her Presidency, Ms. Espinosa has been trying to foster an intergenerational approach as part of her working agenda which includes Youth, Peace and Security as one of her seven priorities.

The PGA has been invited by the Government of Portugal to speak at the opening of the “World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth 2019 and Youth Forum – Lisboa + 21”, which will start tomorrow in Lisbon, the country’s capital. 

In Lisbon, the PGA will hold bilateral meetings with members of the Government of Portugal and of civil society. Ms. Espinosa has just paid a visit to the Foundation Oceano Azul (which means Blue Ocean) to discuss her global campaign against plastic pollution. 

The Foundation promotes environmental action and the development of a new, sustainable, blue economy.

Ms. Espinosa is also expected to meet the founder of the Global Platform for Syrian Students, the former President of Portugal, Mr. Jorge Sampaio.  

The PGA will return to New York on Sunday, 23 June.
