PRESIDENT ESPINOSA CONDEMNS ATTACK IN COLOMBIA

The President of the General Assembly has issued a tweet condemning the atrocious attack against the General Santander police academy, in Bogotá, Colombia. Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa expresses solidarity with the victims and their families, the people and the Government of Colombia. The PGA wishes a speedy recovery to all injured in this attack.

GA AND ECOSOC TO BRIEF ON REVITALISATION ON 31 JANUARY

The President of the General Assembly has sent a letter to Member States informing that a joint briefing of the GA and the Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC, will be held on 31 January at the Trusteeship Council.

Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa will join the President of ECOSOC, Ms. Inga Rhonda King, for the briefing which will outline efforts to facilitate coherence in the work of the GA and the ECOSOC.

The objective is to enhance synergies, and coherence and to reduce overlap where it is found to exist.  The meeting will discuss the alignment process, the High-Political Forum on Sustainable Development, youth, decent work and financing for development. Ms. Espinosa will open the floor to Permanent Missions for their contributions to this debate. The meeting will be on 31 January from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

PGA TO MEET PRESIDENT AND PRIME MINISTER OF PAKISTAN

On Friday, there will be no PGA Noon Briefing from this podium, but President Espinosa will be in Islamabad, Pakistan, on the first working day of her official trip to the country. The PGA will have bilateral meetings with the Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan and the President of the country, Arif Alvi, whom will host a dinner reception for the PGA at the President’s Office. Ms.  Espinosa will continue on her visit meeting with the UN team in the country including the leaders of all UN agencies in Pakistan. She will grant interviews to the Pakistani media, and she will take part in a tree planting ceremony, which the country is promoting as part of a commitment to plant over one billion trees in order to tackle climate change.
