GENERAL ASSSEMBLY AND FAO WILL HOLD EVENT ON CITIES AND GLOBAL CHALLENGES
The General Assembly and the Food and Agricultural Organization, FAO, have announced a joint event on the theme: “From Global Issues to Local Priorities: The role of Cities in the Global Agenda, including Cities for Sustainable Development, Food Security, Nutrition and Climate Change”. The meeting will take place on 19 February from 3-6pm at the Trusteeship Council Chamber.
Participants will address from the local perspective the need for multilateral solutions to tackle challenges and how to implement international outcomes and solutions at the local level, bearing in mind context and priorities of cities and local authorities. At least 55 percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas and this number is expected to rise to 70 percent by 2050.
The joint event also aims to give voice to cities from around the world towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and addressing issues related to climate change, sustainable consumption, food and healthy diets among other topics. The Director-General of FAO, Mr. José Graziano da Silva, will be present at the event with President María Fernanda Espinosa, as well as mayors and former mayors who will share experiences of effective local practices, innovative strategies and lessons learned.
LUNAR NEW YEAR: PRESIDENT ESPINOSA SENDS GOOD WISHES
The President of the General Assembly has issued a tweet to mark the Lunar New Year, which starts today. Ms. Espinosa expresses her best wishes for all people welcoming the “Year of the Pig” in China and in other parts of the world. She wishes all a year filled with health, peace and happiness.
PGA’s AGENDA AND OTHER ISSUES:
President Espinosa started her day with a TV interview to Telesur. She later had a meeting on the High-Level Political Forum. She also had a bilateral meeting with the Presidents of ECOSOC. As we speak, she will grant an interview to La Voce Newspaper. This afternoon, President Espinosa will meet the Ambassador of Colombia, H.E. Guillermo Fernández de Soto on the Peacebuilding Committee.
