HIGH-LEVEL BRIEFING ON THE STATE OF FOOD SECURITY
President María Fernanda Espinosa is taking part today in the High-Level Briefing on the State of Food Security. The meeting is taking place this afternoon at the ECOSOC Chamber and will be attended by the PGA, and the Heads of FAO, WFP and IFAD. Ms. Espinosa stresses that the absolute number of people facing hunger has increased to nearly 821 million in 2017. She says that the findings On ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI)’, are not promising, and that it is time to correct this trend.
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PREVENTING THE EXPLOITATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WAR AND ARMED CONFLICT
Ms. Espinosa tweeted today on the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. She says, and I quote: “War & armed conflict present a risk for humanity and other former of life on our planet. Too many lives and species are at stake. Today is International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. Our colleagues from UN Environment tell us that over the last 60 years, at least 40 percent of all internal conflicts have been linked to the exploitation of natural resources.
PGA’s AGENDA
The PGA has started the day granting an interview to UNITAR and later CCTV. This afternoon she is having bilateral meetings with the Ambassador of Ukraine, and her predecessor, Peter Thomson, the USG of United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and she will also speak at the High-Level Briefing on the State of Food and Security at the ECOSOC Chamber.
