WORLD MUST SUPPORT COLOMBIAN PEACE PROCESS, PRESIDENT TELLS COLOMBIAN FOREIGN MINISTER

  • The President met this morning with the Foreign Minister of Colombia, H.E. María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
  • They exchanged views on Colombia’s experience with respect to peacemaking. The President underlined the inspiring nature of the peace process in Colombia, and encouraged all parties to remain committed to it as the country moves towards reintegrating former FARC-EP members into civilian life.
  • The President emphasized that the international community must remain united in supporting Colombia in the implementation of the peace process.
  • They also discussed current developments in the region.

 

PRESIDENT HIGHLIGHTS SIGNIFICANCE OF I.C.C. AHEAD OF ASSEMBLY MEETING

  • The President of the General Assembly today met with the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi. They discussed the activities of the Court over the last year.
  • President Lajčák underlined the important role of the ICC in the international system and its contribution to strengthening accountability, protecting human rights and promoting the rule of law.
  • The General Assembly will consider the annual report of the International Criminal Court on Monday, 31 October 2017.

 

PRESIDENT PRAISES NEPAL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO U.N. PEACEKEEPING

  • The President met today with E. Mr. Shankar Das Bairagi, Foreign Secretary of Nepal. They discussed issues related to migration, peace, sustainable development, and United Nations reform.
  • The President commended Nepal for its active role within the United Nations, including in relation to the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs).
  • The President encouraged Nepal to actively participate in the events that he would be organizing during the 72nd session, including on sustaining peace, water, financing for development, youth and migration.
  • President Lajčák also praised Nepal’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations, noting the country’s significant contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
