PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

 

PROGRAMME

The United Nations General Assembly decided to hold a high-level meeting on 27 September 2018 to undertake a comprehensive review of the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

The high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases will consist of an opening segment, a plenary segment, two consecutive multi-stakeholder panels and a closing segment. The opening segment, to be held from 10 to 11 a.m., will feature statements by the President of the General Assembly at its seventy-third session, the Secretary-General, the Director General of the World Health Organization, a member of the World Health Organization Independent High-level Commission on Non-communicable Diseases, and an eminent champion of the fight against non-communicable diseases.

The plenary segment, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. will comprise statements by Member States and observers of the General Assembly. Two consecutive multi-stakeholder panels will be held in parallel to the plenary segment, one from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other from 3 to 5 p.m. The closing segment by the President of the General Assembly will comprise summaries of the multi-stakeholder panels and concluding remarks by the President of the General Assembly.

ACCREDITATION

Member States

Member States are encouraged to participate at the highest possible level. Registration of official delegations will be carried out by the United Nations Protocol and Liaison Service.

The list of speakers of Member States and all observers of the General Assembly will be established in accordance with the rules of procedure and established practices of the Assembly.

UN entities

The United Nations system, including funds, programmes and specialized agencies, including WHO, regional commissions and relevant envoys of the Secretary-General, as well as the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Prevention and Control on Non-Communicable Diseases are invited to participate in the high-level meeting.

Stakeholders

Accreditation of non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions and the private sector without ECOSOC consultative status is now closed. Click here to see the list of accredited organizations

Please note that only representatives of organizations with ECOSOC consultative status or organizations with special accreditation to attend the high-level meeting will be able to register to attend.

CIVIL SOCIETY HEARING

 

As part of the preparatory process for the high-level meeting, the President of the General Assembly, with the support of the World Health Organization, will organize and preside over an interactive hearing with the active participation of senior-level representatives of Member States, observers of the General Assembly, parliamentarians, representatives of local government, relevant United Nations entities, non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, invited civil society organizations, philanthropic foundations, academia, medical associations, the private sector and broader communities.

The date of the interactive hearing is 5 July 2018. Registration for the hearing is now closed.
