Peacebuilding Partners - European Union

European Union

April 2025

With peace and conflict prevention at the core of its foreign policy, the European Union (EU) is strategically aligned with the United Nations’ mission to promote sustainable peace and security.

The Peacebuilding Support Office appreciates the strong partnership with the EU both through advocacy for integrated approaches to peace and through peacebuilding financing. The European Union has contributed over $14 million during the PBF’s Strategy 2020-26 in commitments and pledges, reinforcing efforts to ensure that peacebuilding is more inclusive, better coordinated, and sustainably financed.

This support has translated into tangible strategic cooperation on the ground. For example, in the Central African Republic, the EU worked with the UN, the World Bank, and the African Development Bank to develop a joint strategic framework to guide how all interventions can contribute to sustainable peace and work synergistically. The framework, covering the period 2025 to 2028, is built around shared peacebuilding priorities aligned with the Government’s National Development Plan, and includes common indicators to track progress and ensure coordinated action.

Reflecting on the partnership, Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis, European Union Ambassador to the United Nations, remarked:
“With increasing demand for peacebuilding support globally, the partnership between the EU and the UN continues to be a cornerstone of collective efforts to prevent conflict and build lasting peace. The Peacebuilding Fund is an essential tool in achieving our shared vision of sustainable peace and complements the EU’s own tools to promote peace and stability. Through deeper cooperation across the UN system and stronger engagement with key actors on the ground, we are seeing growing impact. The EU proudly supports the Fund’s work to bridge the humanitarian-development-peace divide – aligning with the PACT for the Future’s call for innovative, coordinated solutions to global crises. We are fully committed to that goal.”
