Objective 5.9

We emphasize the importance of increased investment, particularly from the private sector and philanthropy, to scale up artificial intelligence capacity-building for sustainable development. We request the Secretary-General, in consultation with potential contributors and the United Nations system, to develop innovative voluntary financing options for artificial intelligence capacity-building that take into account the recommendations of the High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence on a Global Fund on AI and that are complementary to relevant United Nations funding mechanisms and to submit these for consideration by the General Assembly at the seventy-ninth session.

UN entity lead: Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies

Milestone 1 | Deadline 25 September 2025

Progress status: Compleated

The Secretary-General’s report on innovative voluntary financing options for artificial intelligence capacity-building is submitted.

Why is this action important?

Without investment, AI capacity-building will remain out of reach for many countries, widening global inequalities. This action promotes innovative, voluntary financing, especially from the private sector and philanthropy, to support inclusive, sustainable AI development. It helps ensure that the benefits of AI are shared widely, not hoarded by a few.

What happens next?

September 2025: Report presented to the public during the 80th session of the General Assembly.

September – December 2025: Meetings with relevant partners held to discuss follow-up and implementation of the actions recommended in the report.
