UN system-wide human rights group operational at both principal and expert levels, with strategic priorities finalized.

Why is this action important?

Protecting human rights requires a coordinated UN response. This action institutionalizes human rights coordination across the system by creating a UN system-wide human rights group, led by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, reducing fragmentation and duplication and ensuring efforts are aligned and effective to enhance collective impact.

What happens next?

UN80 will provide further inputs to institutionalizing system-wide coordination on human rights. Preparations are under way for a principal-level meeting – including consultations and drafting of relevant internal documents.

UN Women continues to lead the Secretary-General’s Call to Action / Our Common Agenda Inter-Agency Task Team on Combatting Discriminatory Laws. Together with the World Bank Group and the OECD Development Centre, it will also continue to monitor and report on the implementation of SDG 5.1.1.

To support a more coherent and effective international response to gender-based violence and discrimination, UN Women will maintain its role as Secretariat of the ENDVAW Network. UN Women will also continue work on implementing the newly adopted strategy on protecting LGBTIQ+ persons from violence and discrimination.
