In Geneva, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pays tribute to fallen colleagues killed in Algiers.

United Nations staff in New York, led by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, honoured the memory of their colleagues who were killed in the 11 December terrorist attack in Algiers with a silent march in front of the world body’s Headquarters.
Having just returned from Algiers, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told staff at UN Headquarters that his visit to the attack site and his meetings with the families of the victims and the injured were “profoundly emotional and heartbreaking.”
The Secretary-General brought back to New York the tattered flag that had flown outside the UN offices in Algiers at the time of the attack. He said, “Let us honour this flag and the memory of our fallen friends by redoubling our efforts for peace and security, development and human rights around the world.”
Following the address, staff were invited to participate in a silent march around the UN Circle, organized by the United Nations International Civil Servants Federation (UNISERV), the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Staff Council, the United Nations Staff Union, and UNICEF Global Staff Association.

United Nations staff around the world joined together to observe a minute of silence to honour the victims of the 11 December terrorist attacks in Algiers which claimed the lives of 17 of their colleagues. The Security Council also observed a minute of silence in honour of those who died in Algiers.

Condolence books were opened for all who would wish to honour the United Nations colleagues and other victims of the terrorist attack on the United Nations offices in Algiers.

The Department of Public Information launched the website “In Memoriam: In remembrance of those members of the United Nations Family killed in Algiers on 11 December 2007”. An online condolence book was made available, which let the people around the world honour the fallen in the attack.
