Distinguished guests,Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to the SDG Pavilion for this side event on “Water Management within Climate Informed Decision making to Support UNFCCC and SDGs”.
The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs - UN DESA, is organizing this Pavilion to bring together experts and policymakers leading the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. We are holding these series of discussions to help accelerate action across the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Today’s session will discuss a key area, climate change and water.
Throughout the past decades, we have increasingly felt the impacts of climate change through water. More than 90 percent of disasters are water-related, including flooding and drought. Forty percent of the world’s people are affected by water scarcity. And intensified flooding threaten to destroy water points and sanitation facilities, and contaminate our water sources.
Water management plays therefore an important role in climate change adaptation and resilience. At the United Nations, Member States have recognized the need to reinvigorate action around water. They have proclaimed the period between 2018 and 2028 the “International Decade for Action – Water for Sustainable Development”. The aim of the Decade is to enable a greater focus on sustainable development and the integrated management of water resources.
UN DESA is responsible for carrying out the mandates contained in the General Assembly resolution on the Water Action Decade. and to plan and facilitate related activities. We have been co-chairing, together with United Nations University, the UN-Water Task Force on the Water Action Decade. As such, we are supporting Member States and stakeholders in the implementation of the objectives of the Decade.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today’s event, organized together with our colleagues from UNESCO, UNECE and WMO, will present the importance of water management within climate informed decision making to support implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda, aiming to support policymakers in finding solutions to managing climate and water in a more coordinated and sustainable manner.
As the recently launched United Nations Policy Brief on Climate Change and Water highlights, national and regional climate policy and planning must take an integrated approach to climate change and water management.
The time has come for climate policies to address water across all sectors to ensure a climate-resilient and sustainable future for all.
Let us all work together to that end.
UNDESA is honored to host this event. We remain fully committed to work with you and support efforts at all levels on water and climate action.
I wish you a successful event and fruitful deliberations.
Thank you.
