People will always move. Looking for a better life, we move to different cities, to other states or provinces, to different countries or across continents. Sometimes, we are forced to flee in the face of danger.

The worst pandemic in over a century has severely interrupted the flow of people around the globe. When national borders were closed and international travel restricted in 2020 due to COVID-19, international migration was significantly affected. Up to mid-2020, the increase in the number of international migrants was around one-quarter smaller than it would have been without COVID-19.

On Friday, 15 January 2021, at 12 noon EST, UN DESA’s Population Division will release the latest International Migrants 2020 Highlights report, which contains the latest estimates on the number of international migrants by country of destination, origin, age and sex. In this report, the UN experts who study movements of people across international borders, provide details about major migration levels and trends, the demographic impact of migration as well as progress in facilitating safe, orderly and regular migration.

The report will be presented by John Wilmoth, Director, and Clare Menozzi, Population Affairs Officer, from UN DESA’s Population Division. The launch will be webcast live at webtv.un.org.

The International Migration 2020 Highlights, as well as related materials, will be available on 15 January at 12 noon EST at bit.ly/MigrationHighlights.
