On 19th and 21st January, UN DESA experts will log on to two live interactive sessions where they will answer your questions about the future of sustainable development, inequalities and a green recovery from the pandemic. Register now to secure your spot by the fireside!

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed and exacerbated the deep layers of inequality within and between countries – between the rich and poor, women and men, youth and older people of various races and disabilities. It has become clear that tinkering around the edges of our societies and economies is not enough. We need a brand new social contract to face the challenges of our time.

Leading UN DESA experts will discuss “Shaping a New Social Contract and New Global Deal” in the latest installment of our Global Policy Dialogue series. Top specialists on economic, social and environmental issues will share their experiences and take questions from the audience in two “fireside chats”.

In two sessions, on equality and inclusive growth, and on data for climate action and sustainable development, UN DESA experts will discuss how we can make our societies resilient to some of the greatest troubles our world is confronted by today.

Post-pandemic recovery plans need to go hand-in-hand with sustainable development and climate action. Otherwise, we risk plunging from one crisis straight into another. As the world works to fight the novel coronavirus and recover from it, we also need to tackle the “inequality pandemic” and deploy new technologies to ensure the digital divide does not deepen the chasm between the haves and have-nots. Moreover, we need to avoid a climate disaster by using data and statistics to support climate action and Sustainable Development Goals.

The two events will feature a “town hall”-style format, encouraging debate and a free exchange. Two separate session in one week will offer a rare insider's glimpse into the work at the heart of sustainable development.

To enhance engagement, participants will be invited to submit questions online at the time of registration as well as during the event.

The results of the discussion will be shared with UN leadership and will inform future UN DESA policy briefs on the economic and social impacts of the pandemic and the Department’s support to the Decade of Action for Sustainable Development.
